iKungFu Master Review

iKungFu Master has quickly risen as a well received app and I noticed many reviewers saying that it was the best thing they had played on an iPod.  I was requested to check out the game and give it an honest review, so this is it.

iKungFu master is one of few side scrolling, button bashing beat'em-ups that pay homage, not to just the old arcade games, but primarily the late 80's martial arts movies that all of these games are derived from.   Like all games of the genre, every level consists of you having to fight waves of enemies before meeting the big boss at the end.

The premise is that you have been held to ransom.  The love of your life has been stolen and  you have been asked to pay up ten million dollars for her return.  Well needless to say you happen to be a bit of a martial arts pro and soon decided to kick arse instead.

Every level is set out with a new background and a unique boss.  To get to this boss you must carve your way through an army of enemy stickmen all with a variety of different martial arts weapons.  With each kill you gain experience that allows you to unlock more weapons and level up.

It is within this system that they game prides itself, yet it is its biggest flaw.  I would expect to have to grind if I was playing an RPG but a side scrolling beat'em up should be about moving forward.  This system means that the player has to fight infinite enemies on every level in order to level up and then fight the boss.  After a while this gets tedious and dull, there are not enough enemy types and the constant walking up and down the level gets boring.  The bosses also use a small easily to understand movement pattern, that creates no challenge for seasoned gamers that are used to the genre.

iKungFu does well due to there being a severe lack of beat'em ups in the app store.  Not supporting achievements or a leaderboard system hold the game back along with it's repetitive and boring nature.  If you are content to walk to and fro kicking the same stickmen in over and over again, this game may be for you, however if you like your beat'em ups to have a bit of meat to them, steer clear of this one.
